It does not represent my own personal vision of the Free Associated State, neither does it represent that of other members of the Group inasmuch as the consensus of all is not the opinion of anyone in particular. I am one of those who expound that the powers of the Free Associated State must, in many cases, be stronger and its range of autonomic action wider. It is in this context that I wish to make my position clear as to the only specific matter to which I will address myself in these comments. It is indeed unfortunate that in this day and age some wish to establish a correlation between political liberties and economic aid. Yet, as long as man exists, the eternal conflict between the chains of avarice and the flourishing of liberty will continue to exist. Bearing in mind this reality I, contrary to others who share with me this position, believe that the best way to dissipate this issue and break the chains that bind the spirit, is not for Puerto Rico to aspire to contribute to the general expenses of the federation which constitutes the United States of America, but to gradually end all aid that is not necessary to provide, not a rich life, but a life free from hunger and misery which dignifies man and 73 72
