MEMORANDUM TO:

FROM:

SUBJECT:
Action Memo
Mrs. Ford has accepted the following out-of-town invitations:
EVENT: Fifth Lithuanian Folk Dance Festival
GROUP: Lithuanian-American Community of the U.S.A., Inc.
DATE: Sunday, September 5, 1976
TIME: 2:00 p.m.
PLACE: International Amphitheatre
4300 South Halstead Street
Chicago, Illinois
CONTACT: Mr. Val Adamkus
O: 312-353-2000
SEAL R. FORD LIBRARY

COMMENTS: The Lithuanian-American Community is sponsoring the
Fifth Lithuanian Folk Dance Festival in salute to the
Bicentennial. One hundred and two groups of over
2000 Lithuanian folk dancers will perform. The
attendance is expected to be about 10,000. The
Festival is registered with ARBA as the Lithuanian
community's principal festivity. Although
Mr. Bruno Juodelis is the chairman (312-968-3869),
Mr. Adamkus is the contact. Congressman Edward Derwinsky
(R-Ill) has also been interested in this event and
called to endorse it.
- 2 -
Mrs. Ford will remain in Vail until Saturday afternoon, when
she will travel to the Chicago area and overnight. Sunday
morning, September 5th, she will attend church at the Shiloh
Baptist Church in Waukegan, Illinois. Congressman Robert McClory
will also attend, as will the Mayor of Waukegan, Robert Sabonjian.
Her attendance at the Shiloh Baptist Church stems from a
conversation the President had directly with Congressman McClory
in the early part of this year. At that time the President
told Congressman McClory he would strongly recommend that Mrs. Ford
accept this invitation if at all possible. Thus, because it is
unlikely she will be in Illinois again on a Sunday, this seemed
maybe the best opportunity to accept the invitation. Attending
the Shiloh Baptist Church is a woman named Mary Lacey who does
gospel singing. It is my understanding she will sing during
the service. The contact is the minister of the church:
Rev. Jonathan Lightfoot (O: 312-662-6325 or 312-668-9361;
H: 312-244-6451). I think driving times would be one of my
chief concerns about this. The file is attached.
Thank you.

Dear Jonathan and Mrs. Lightfoot:
It was truly an historic occasion when our First Lady joined the
congregation at Shiloh Baptist Church on Sunday to receive inspiration
and spiritual uplift at the memorable service. The Pastoral Prayer
and Sermon had special significance for the First Lady and President
Ford, as well as to all of us who serve in public office.
The choral and solo religious selections revealed talents and devotion
which are truly outstanding. The nationally acclaimed gospel singer
Mary Lacey who initiated the appearance of our First Lady gave eloquent
proof of her excellence in performing religious music.
In my view the most moving aspect of the experience at Shiloh Baptist
Church was the warmth and cordiality expressed by the congregation.
Our First Lady, Mrs. Betty Ford, was noticeably impressed by the warm
and loving thoughts, the handshakes, the smiles, the tender kisses of
some of the younger members of the congregation, and even more particularly
by the very gracious. reception tendered by you and Mrs. Lightfoot, Mary
Lacey and by all who worship at Shiloh Baptist Church.
I take this occasion in my own behalf and as the Representative in
Congress for our beloved community to express my personal gratitude
for your generous welcome and for the complete cooperation which was
evidenced throughout the planning and consummation of this historic
visit of our nation's First Lady to Waukegan, Illinois.
With every good wish to you both.

Dear Mrs. Ford:
The Lithuanian community was delighted by your participation at
the V Lithuanian Folk Dance Festival. Your gracious remarks on
behalf of yourself and the President brought both honor and pride
to all Lithuanians. In particular, your reaffirmation of the Pres-
ident's concern for the freedom of occupied Lithuania and Eastern
Europe provided us with an added determination to continue in our
struggle for an independent Lithuania. We firmly believe that the
present Administration will continue to support our cause and assist
us in our endeavors for the freedom of an enslaved nation.
We also believe that this cultural event of our Lithuanian youth
has provided you with a greater awareness of Lithuanian culture,
customs and has brought with it an added perspective of our deep
commitment to the Lithuanian national heritage. In turn, we hope
that you have not only become better acquainted but also have grown
more fond of the Lithuanian people.
The Lithuanian World Community extends its sincerest appreciation
to you for joining in our festivities. Your presence at the V
Lithuanian Folk Dance Festival has been considered a great honor.
Sincerely,
Prones Nainy

Dear Betty:
It goes without saying that your appearance at Shiloh
Baptist Church in Waukegan on Sunday was most success-
ful from every standpoint. The warmth of the reception
was reflected in the tender kisses and warm handclasps
which you received as well as in the generous smiles
which radiated from the faces of the entire congrega-
tion.
Your attendance was likewise a tribute to my friend
Mary Lacey, who is a well known gospel singer through-
out the nation, and who together with her many other
friends are deeply appreciative of the honor which
you paid her by your attendance at the service where
she performed.
I am confident that your experience in Waukegan and
at Shiloh Baptist Church provided a memorable exper-
ience.
With appreciation - and warm regards.
Sincerely
yours,

Dear Val,
It was a real pleasure meeting you
recently, and I was so pleased to be able
to participate in the Fifth Lithuanian Folk
Dance Festival. And I do indeed cherish
my very own Lithuanian costume!
You were the perfect host at the
reception -- a lovelier afternoon it could
not have been and certainly not with a
warmer group of people. Please know too
how very much I appreciated all of your
behind-the-scenes work in preparation for
my visit as well as your kind introduction
at the festival. It was an occasion I shall
always recall with fondest memories.
GENERAL R. FORD
with gratitude and warm best wishes
from both the President and me,
