Digitized from Box D17 of The Ford Congressional Papers: Press Secretary and Speech File at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library Draft #1 3/17/65 Steve Hess 5 National Press Club Speech - March 2,, 1965 by Gerald R. Ferd I feel quite honored to have been asked to address the National Press I Club. However, for some strange reasen, having se many distinguished reporters come here to break bread with me - a simple Republican - calls to mind the passage from the Bible: "Where the carcass is there willtk the eagles gather." Actually, I am particularly pleased to be here because your President, Bill Blair, and I have se much in common - We both have recently run in hotly contested elections; We both won by narrew margins; And, now that weive had time to observe the pitfalls and beeby traps of our new pesitions, we'd both like semeone to tell us why we were se "all fired up" to get our jobs in the first place! Se, at this time, I would like to make a presentation: To Clark Mollenheff - I now present the Charles A. Halleck Award for the Best Last Laugh of 1965! R. FORD
