C. 20301 TO: The President The White House Washington, D. C. 20500 aware Dear Mr. President: The citizens of our area will enter the bicentennial era on 14 June 1975 with a significant tribute to the U. S. Army and to the American Infantryman on their 200th year of service to our nation. We feel the natural site for such a program should be Fort Benning, Georgia, for it is not only the "Home of the Infantry,' but offers many strong additional considerations as shown in the enclosed fact OSA 001 FORT BENNING 12/3/74 sheet. Major General Thomas Tarpley, the Fort Benning Commander, has assured us of his full support. We would be honored by your presence as Commander-in-Chief and cordially invite you to address an audience drawn from our community of over 250,000 people. The program outlined in the enclosure can be altered to your schedule. We are proud to be Americans, and we welcome this unique opportunity to demonstrate our patriotism and respect for our Army. We hope you will participate and express the thoughts and feelings of the American people. Respectfully yours, Charles Event CHARLES Chairman S. DALEY Dally President Chapter W. In response to your question concerning the four schools visited by the President at Fort Benning on 14 June, the following information was verified in contact with LTC Rushing, Deputy Director of Plans and Training, USAIC. 2. The President visited activities presented by elements of the US Army Infantry School, namely: a. Ranger Department, USAIS - Director, Col James M. Bowers. b. Airborne - Airmobility Department, USAIS - Director, Col Jack G. Whitted. 3. No other schools, or departments, of the USAIS were involved. JAMES H. HANCOCK, JR. Lieutenant Colonel, GS Assistant to the Director of the Army Staff THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON June 26, 1975 JACK, You will recall the initial suggestion that was made with regard to the presentation of an autographed photograph of the President to a specific unit at Fort Benning. As an alternative suggestion, it was decided to request of the Army a listing of those units to which, in their view, the President might send an autographed photo following his visit. The attached memo contains a rather extensive listing. We now have two options: 1) Scrap the whole idea 2) Forward the list to the appropriate White House office for the preparation of individual- ized scripting and Presidential signatures.
