I WANT TO WELCOME ALL OF YOU TO THIS VERY SPECIAL EVENING IN HONOR OF MY GOOD FRIEND, JOHN ANDERSON. WHILE I REGRET THAT BETTY AND I CANNOT BE WITH YOU, WE WANT TO USE THIS MEANS TO CONVEY OUR BEST WISHES TO JOHN AND KEKE -- AND OUR APPRECIATION TO ALL THEIR FRIENDS WHO ARE GATHERED AT THE WAGON WHEEL. - 2 - JOHN AND I GO BACK A LONG WAY TOGETHER. WE WORKED SIDE BY SIDE IN THE CONGRESS FOR MANY YEARS. FROM MY OWN EXPERIENCE AS A CONGRESSMAN, AS MINORITY LEADER OF THE HOUSE, AS THE VICE PRESIDENT AND NOW AS PRESIDENT, I CAN SAY WITHOUT QUESTION THAT JOHN IS ONE OF THE HARDEST WORKING, ABLEST AND MOST EFFECTIVE MEMBERS OF THE CONGRESS. A VERY GOOD GUY. - 3 - AS CHAIRMAN OF THE HOUSE REPUBLICAN CONFERENCE -- A JOB I ONCE HELD, I'M PROUD TO SAY -- HE HELPS MOLD REPUBLICAN POLICY IN THE HOUSE AND PROVIDES RESPONSIBLE LEADERSHIP ON OUR SIDE OF THE AISLE. A LEADER OF PUBLIC OPINION, A MASTER OF THE LEGISLATIVE PROCESS, AND AN EXPERT ON PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURES, JOHN IS / AN INVALUABLE ASSET TO OUR PARTY AND TO THE NATION. I want to to welcome all of you to this very special evening in honor of my good friend, John Anderson. While I regret that Betty and I cannot be with you, we want to use this means to convey our best wishes to John and Keke -- and our appreciation to all their friends who are gathered at the Wagon Wheel. John and I go back a long way together. We worked side by side in the Congress for many years. From my own experience as a Congressman, as Minority Leader of the House, as the Vice President and now as President, I can say without question that John is one of ablest the hardest working, brightest and most effective members of the Congress. In addition ! he avery I is wish we had good guy. like more him. As Chairman of the House Republican Conference -- a position job In proud to say I once held, incidentally -- he helps mold Republican policy in the -3- a avery House and provides responsible leadership on our side of the n aisle. John andreson A leader as of public opinion, a master of the legislative process, and a real He an expert on parliamentary procedures, John is an invaluable asset to our party and to the Nation. I am delighted to join in this tribute to him. Since I know you have a full program tonight, let me now introduce your Master of Ceremonies, and I might add, another old friend of mine: the impressario of Chicago television, Irv Kupcinet (Cup-sin-et). # # #
