Ford Presidential Library\nTHE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN\n...\nTALKING POINTS FOR BUSINESS ORGANIZATION LEADERS, WEDNESDAY,\nSEPTEMBER 29, 1976\nI welcome the opportunity to speak to this\ndistinguished group of business leaders.\nToday 88 million Americans are gainfully employed --\nmore than ever before in our history. But that's not good\nenough.\nMy immediate goal is two and a half million new\njobs every year with emphasis on our youth, especially the\nminorities. Not demeaning, dead-end jobs paid for out of\nthe Federal Treasury, but permanent jobs with a future\ngenerated by the demands of a healthy economy.\nCan we do it? We have done it.\nWe proved once and for all that you can cut\ninflation in half and add four million new jobs in just 17\nmonths. We did it with tax cuts that allowed Americans to\nspend more of their own money. We did it with tax incentives\nthat encouraged job production. We did it by letting our\nfree economic system do what it does better than any other\n-2-\nsystem in the world -- produce.\nBut I won't be satisfied until every American\nwho wants a job can find a job.\nI am particularly concerned that there are too\nmany young Americans who cannot find a good job, or get\nthe training and experience they need to find a good job.\nAmericans have long since recognized the importance\nof assuring that every high school graduate who is willing,\nable and qualified be able to go to college. We have done\nso through grants, loans and scholarships.\nI believe we can apply this same principle to create\na program for young people who choose not to go to college,\nbut want a job at which they can learn a trade, a craft\nor practical business skills.\nLet's put America -- all of America -- to work!\nWe must also continue our battle against the\ndeadly enemy of inflation. By holding the line on government\nspending, by not being afraid to say \"no\" to the big\n-3-\nspenders in Congress, we cut inflation in half, and we\nsaved more than 9 billion dollars in the process. We must\ndo even better in the future, and we will.\nWe've had some less than encouraging news on the\neconomy this week, with the report from the Commerce\nDepartment on leading economic indicators.\nBut I am convinced that America's economic recovery\nwill continue, it will pick up steam in the months ahead,\nand it will lead us on the road to a new prosperity in the\nUnited States without the heavy burden of inflation.\nThat is my goal. That is my policy. That is what\nI expect to happen, with your help.\nI appreciate your being here today, and I hope\nyou'll stay for the refreshments.\n# # #"
