Dear Sheila: Attached is a copy of the Bicentennial Minute for July 4th, 1976 which I hope will interest you and Mrs. Ford. As you know from our previous discussions, the CBS Bicentennial Minute series has been going on since July 4, 1974 and was intended to close out on July 4, 1976 commemorating our nation's 200th Birthday. We had hoped to have both President Ford and Mrs. Ford do this special July 4th minute, however, due to equal time problems we are prohibited from offer- ing this minute to the President. I am hopeful that we will be able to work something out with you as this is really the highlight of the Bicentennial series. The actual taping of the minute can be done at the White House and I am sure we can work out a convenient date. Please let me hear from you as soon as possible. Washington, D.C. 20036 (202) 296-1234 Dear Sheila: June 9, 1976 Attached is a copy of the newest, bestest version of the Bicentennial Minute script for Mrs. Ford. I think it has been substantially im- proved and hope you agree. As plans now stand, the crew will be over Monday, June 14 to set up and at Mrs. Ford's convenience will tape the Minute in the afternoon. I realize there has been some confusion with various producers, etc. phoning and changing plans, however, I hope I have ended that problem by circulating all communication with your office through my office. Thanks again for all your help. Will see you on Monday. Regards, Rae Rae Forker Evans Manager, Legislative Affairs Mrs. Sheila Weidenfeld In care of Mrs. Sally Quenneville The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, D.C. 20500 July 4, 1776 (Revised) I'm Betty Ford. Two hundred years ago today, there was a new idea a new sound a new voice in the world. The 2nd Continental Congress spanked the new country into being by approving Jefferson's Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. It was a chicken-scratched, argued-about, finely- edited, dog-eared-document the President of Congress and the secretary signed and sent down to the official printer. Contrary to popular myth, the perfect parchment version we all know wasn't made until August, when most dele- gates signed. Some signed later. Some didn't sign at all. Matter of fact, many names were kept secret for a time in fear of British reprisals. The Declaration has been called: "a prose lyric of civil and military herosim a war song a chant of human freedom.' Because of it--two hundred years ago today a new voice was heard in the world: (simply) The United States of America. I'm Betty Ford and that's the way it was. The 2nd Continental Congress spanked the new country into being by approving Jefferson's Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. John Hancock and Secretary Charles Thomson signed. Contrary to popular myth, most dele- gates didn't sign until August, some signed later. Some refused to sign at all. Little did any of them know that at the same time the Declaration was approved, about 10,000 British troops were setting up camp on Staten Island -- unopposed. But John Adams foresaw "the toil, and blood, and treasure" this venture would cost. Two hundred years ago today, a new voice was heard in the world -- The United States of America.
