AFTER CHURCH SERVICES: President Ford and his wife,
Betty, with the Rev. John C. Harper, rector of St. John's
Church in Washington, as they left church yesterday
morning. The onetime center for the University of Mi-
chigan later watched the Super Bowl on television.
President Ford attended church for
the first time since two assassination
attempts were made against him. Ac-
companied by Mrs. Ford and daugh-

blocks from the White House to St,
John's Episcopal Church and sat on
the aisle in a seventh-row pew with
Secret Service agents sitting behind
him. Mr. Ford chose not to shake
hands with well-wishers but paused
to wave to the crowd before depart-

up the opportunity to play golf in or-

Carter Must Show More Spark to Get Nomination
On ABC's "Issues and Answers" Sunday, pollster Lou Harris
said Jimmy Carter's campaign has been based on the weakness of
his opponents rather than a positive appeal to voters, and he
will have to "show more spark" in order to get the Democratic
presidential nomination.
Harris said Carter's attributes apparently are: He seems
to "promise less" than other candidates, is a "new face," doesn't
come from Washington, and "is reasonably a man of integrity."
Harris added that Hubert Humphrey seems to be everybody's
alternative right now. He said today the best way to explain the
appeal of Humphrey is nostalgia. "He has become kind of the elder
statesman in the Democratic party and the old labels the flaming
liberal, even radical, that seems to be gone." AP, UPI ----- (4/18/76)

A SERVICE OF CELEBRATION AND REDEDICATION
"FAITH OF OUR FATHERS! living still, in spite of dungeon, fire and
sword": a living faith in the sovereignty of God that has refused to die
through the ages in spite of persecution and other efforts of men to
extinguish it.
That is what the religious part of each of us celebrates when we
celebrate the Bicentennial of our nation. It is the faith, hope and vision
that our forebearers had which caused the foundation of our nation to be
laid as it was. It is a foundation which still calls for optimism, hope
and even ambition to push into the future.
Our ancestors were more willing to attribute their faith and optimisim
to belief in God than perhaps many of us are. However, those qualities --
faith, hope, optimism, vision come from an inner feeling that things
beyond our personal control will be all right. However we choose to name
it, that is faith in God.
The religious community of Grand Rapids is organizing a Bicentennial
observance on July 4th. Our church has been asked to join with St. Mark's-
From there we will process to the Calder-joining all other faiths in

NBC is planning to televise the service as part of its nationwide cover-
age of the Bicentennial. As the President's home city, we look forward to
sharing with the entire country our belief in God and the values upon which
our country was founded.
PLEASE PLAN TO JOIN us IN THIS DEMONSTRATION OF OUR FAITH.
WE NEED EACH AND EVERYONE OF you.
