C. 20036 / (202) 293-3166 You Are Invited to a Two-Day Field Trip EDUCATION VISITS IN ONTARIO Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) and Ontario Science Center Toronto, Canada Wednesday evening, July 9- LIBRARY GERALD FORD Friday evening, July 11 Finally, we're going to take that trip to OISE (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education), a visit which many of you have frequently requested. While in Toronto, we'll also visit the Ontario Science Center. Our successful trip in March to Science Museums in the San Francisco area made us aware of your enthusiasm for these dynamic institutions of "non-traditional learning." OISE has three prime functions: to conduct programs of graduate study in education, offering degrees at both the masters and doctors level; to carry out research ranging from the basic study of the nature of learning to the development and testing of materials for classroom use; to assist practicing educators implement new methods and materials. The final activity is aided through eight OISE field centers located throughout Ontario. The Ontario Science Center was opened in 1969 as a centennial project of the Province of Ontario. "Hands-on" exhibits displayed throughout the three building complex explore the molecular world, space travel, the environment, heredity, natural resources, transportation modes, and many other areas. The Center serves as a learning resource for the general public and is used frequently as an alternative classroom for school children. We plan to depart for our Toronto visit on Wednesday, July 9, at 6:05 P.M. on American Airlines 354 (departing from National Airport--arriving in Toronto at 8:49 P.M.) We will spend all day Thursday at OISE, and Friday morning and part of the afternoon at the Science Center. Our return flight is scheduled on American Airlines 511, departing Toronto on Friday, July 11 at 3:45 P.M. and arriving at National at 6:23 P.M. (If you wish to remain in Toronto for the weekend please notify our travel agent, Claude Chesneau, at 659-1420.) If you are interested in joining ESS on this field trip, please call Ms. Kent or Ms. Miah at 293-3166. We will send you a more complete description of the two institutions we will visit as soon as you have registered. This way, if there is something of particular interest to you at either place, you can notify us in advance so that we are certain to include your interest on our final agenda. --George Lane Sharon Enright INSTITUTE FOR EDUCATIONAL WASHINGTON US POSTAGE LEADERSHIP JUN 10 711 ITS 10 = #76 EMETER D.C 5090097 ** THE Mr. Theodore C. GERALD LIBRARY Dear Dr. Marrs: The new President of the national USO, Inc., is General Michael S. Davison, U. S. Army (Ret.). Until June 30th, he was the Commander, U. S. Army, Europe and Seventh Army. He's going to make his home here in the Washington area and will establish an office for the USO here in Washington, D.C. Temporarily, he is sharing space in my office at 602 Ring Building. I'm going to have a luncheon for him in the Tastevin Room of the International Club at 18th and K Streets, N. W., on Tuesday, September 9th, at 12:30. I want to introduce him to some new friends and also take this opportunity for him to renew acquaintances with some he has known before. I certainly hope that you'll be able to come and say hello to him. Incidentally, since the USO will only take up about half of his time, Mike is also going to open an office as Washington representative of Joseph R. Loring & Associates, a consulting engineering firm. JRL is one of the four or five largest mechanical and electrical engineering firms in the country. In your long tours of duty at the Pentagon, you may have met Mike Davison. Whether you have or not, when he settles down I want to bring him by and make an official call on you at your office. Meanwhile, if that noted occasion doesn't occur before September 9, I hope you can find time to join this happy group. You will know most of the people there. FORD SPONSORED BY THE OVERSEAS EDUCATION FUND OF THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS SEPTEMBER 26 TO NOVEMBER 1, 1975 The Multinational Seminar is the most intensive of a number of training programs sponsored by the Overseas Education Fund of the League of Women Voters for leaders of volunteer organizations in developing nations. It provides a unique training experience in the United States of five weeks duration that includes workshops on organizational and management tech- niques, problem solving applied to the participants' specific situations, the exchange of ideas and experiences, on-site inspection of volunteer community action programs in the United States, and observation of the United States government, institutions, and way of life. OEF has in recent years held two such seminars annually--one for volunteer leaders from Latin America and another for those from Asian nations. This year's Latin American seminar is the 16th held since 1961. It is conducted entirely by OEF, with the support of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The participants are selected because of their leadership in organiza- tions that coordinate social services and that train volunteer workers. The seminar, under the theme "Coordination of Resources for Community Action," is designed to give these volunteer leaders the training, experience, and skills they can use to improve the social services that volunteers provide and to expand the role of voluntary action in shaping the development of their communities. The OEF Latin American Seminar is really a training program for those who train others in their home countries; it is a leadership program for those who seek to inspire leadership in others. In this fashion OEF is able to use its limited resources to create a multiplier effect for its training that extends its reach significantly. In most cases, OEF has an ongoing relationship through its field staff with the organizations represented by the participants. This enables OEF to continue the work of the seminar in direct application to the problems in the developing nations. The first three weeks (September 26-October 15) will be spent in the Washington area in workshops and training sessions. Participants will also have the opportunity to observe local volunteer agencies. At the end of the third week (October 16-25) the entire Seminar will visit New York and the United Nations. Half the group will then travel to Appleton, Wisconsin while the other goes to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Local Leagues of Women Voters will assist in the programming in these cities. The final week (October 26-November 1) will be spent in the Washington area in addi- tional workshops that focus on applying the seminar experience to concrete situations in the participants' home countries. The 16 Latin American participants are from Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Ecuador. There are also two participants from the United States. All are active, committed leaders, in positions to influence the programs of their organizations. The Seminar is conducted in Spanish.
