Dear Ray:
Thank you for your very thoughtful letter of
October 16. For the record, I will, of course,
accept your resignation as Special Consultant
20 the President effective, as you requested,
on November 8, 1974.
Beyond this, however, I want to express my
personal appreciation for your service to the
White House and for your contributions to our
country. I know that for nearly six years you
were a key member of President Nixon's staff.
During this time, and earlier in the 1968
Presidential campaign, you carried out your
responsibilities in a way that earned you the
respect and friendship of your colleagues in
government and the admiration of those on both
sides of the political fence.
History will one day record the important achieve-
ments of these past years. But at the time these
events were unfolding you had the difficult task of
helping to articulate them to the American people.
That you were able to do so in such a clear and
compelling manner is tribute not only to your
skills as a writer but also to your impressive
knowledge and understanding of national and world
affairs. This was again made evident by the com-
ments in your letter to me.

Like you, I have a deep faith in our Nation and
confidence in its future, and I truly appreciate
your good wishes for the time ahead. In turn,
you can be sure you have my own best wishes
for every continued success and happiness.
