Ford Presidential Library\nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE\nNOVEMBER 13, 1974\nOFFICE OF THE WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY\nTHE WHITE HOUSE\nREMARKS OF THE PRESIDENT\nAT THE\nSIGNING OF THE WIN CONSUMER PROCLAMATION\nTHE CABINET ROOM\n1:13 P.M. EST\nTHE PRESIDENT: Before signing, I would like to\nread a statement that has been prepared.\nMrs. Ford and I are signing today the first\nConsumer's Pledge prepared for Americans by the Non-\npartisan Citizens Committee to Fight Inflation. The\nWIN committee is asking mayors and principal county\nofficials across this country to set up local action\ncommittees for distribution in the near future of similar\npledges for citizens to sign in a concerted mass effort\nto stop inflation.\nThe committee has also prepared a businessman\nand businesswoman's pledge and a worker's pledge for\nlocal distribution. Each Governor is being asked to\nestablish one Statewide committee to determine ways\nand means to slow inflation and to save energy in each\nState.\nIf all Americans will pull together to hold\ndown prices, to buy wisely, to increase productivity\nand to save energy, this citizen's mobilization to\nslow inflation can and will work. Inflation is sapping\nthe economic strength of this country, and it must be\nbrought under control.\nSo, at this point Betty will sign the first\nplege and I will join her.\nQ\nMr. President, what are you going to do\nto carry out this plan?\nTHE PRESIDENT: Well, the things that I buy,\nI will be very careful in purchasing. I think we have\ngot to increase our productivity -- that includes me.\nWe have to be Yankee traders when we buy, and we have to\ncooperate individually and collectively, and Mrs. Ford\nhas pledged to me as well as here she will do the same.\nEND\n(AT 1:16 P.M.
