THE WHITE HOUSE
The President today announced his intention to nominate Mark "Evans"
Austad, now serving as Vice President of Metromedia, Inc., as Ambassador
to Finland. He will succeed V. John Krehbiel who has resigned.
Born April 1, 1917, in Ogden, Utah, he attended Weber State College re-
ceiving a certificate in 1941. He served as a Mormon Missionary to
Norway from 1936 to 1939. He was a United States Army Voluntary Officer
Candidate from 1943 to 1946 (Radio Station at Walter Reed Hospital). From
1946 to 1948 he was with station WWDC as a Commentator, and from 1948 to
1958 he was with WTOP-CBS as a Commentator and Morning Man. From
1958 to the present he has been Vice President (for Public Affairs)
Metromedia, Inc., in Washington, D.C. He hosted his own television pro-
gram "The Mark Evans Show". He has been a Lecturer and Master of
Ceremonies for various civic and service groups in the United States. He
was Anchorman on an award winning documentary on pollution called "1985".
He served as United States Alternate Representative to the Twenty-eighth
Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, 1973. Among the
awards he has received are the Outstanding Young Man Award, Ogden,
Utah Junior Chamber of Commerce; the National Oratorical Award, 1940;
Weber State National Extemporaneous Award 1941 and the District Citizenship
Award by Prince George's County,
He is married to the former Lola Brown and they have three daughters.
