Ford Presidential Library\nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE\nDECEMBER 22, 1975\nOffice of the White House Press Secretary\nTHE WHITE HOUSE\nThe President today announced his intention to nominate Joseph A. Greenwald,\nof Chicago, Illinois, to be an Assistant Secretary of State for Economic\nand Business Affairs. He will succeed Thomas O. Enders who became\nAmbassador to Canada on December 15, 1975.\nSince 1972, Mr. Greenwald, a career Minister, has been United States\nRepresentative to the United States Mission to the European Communities,\nwith the rank of Ambassador. From 1969 to 1972, he was the United\nStates Representative to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and\nDevelopment with the personal rank of Ambassador in Paris, France. He\nserved at the Department of State from 1963 to 1969, serving successively\nas Director of the Office of International Trade for the Bureau of\nEconomic Affairs (1963-65); Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-\nnational Trade Policy and Economic Defense (1965-1969); and Acting\nAssistant Secretary of State for Economic Affairs (1969). He was an\nEconomic Officer in London, England from 1958 to 1963.\nIn 1955, Mr. Greenwald became Chief of the Special Problems Branch with\nthe Trade Agreements and Treaties Division for the Bureau of Economic\nand Chief of the Commercial Programs Branch, serving until 1958. From\n1952 to 1955, he was an Economic Adviser with the United States Delegation\nto the Economic Commission for Europe in Geneva, Switzerland, after having\nserved as an Economist with the Division of Commercial Policy from\n1949 to 1952 at the Department. From 1947 to 1949 he was an Economist\nwith International Resources Division at the State Department.\nMr. Greenwald was born on September 18, 1918, in Chicago, Illinois, and\nreceived his B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1941. He attended\nGeorgetown University and received his LL. B. in 1951. He served in\nthe United States Navy during 1940-41 and became an Economist in the\nOffice of Production Management in 1941. He served as a Warrant Officer,\nPurser-Pharmacist with the United States Maritime Service from 1944 to 1946.\nHe became an Economist in the Office of Price Administration during 1946-\n47.\nMr. Greenwald is married to the former Virginia Doyle and they have three\nchildren. They reside in Brussels, Belgium.\n#\n#\n#"
