NOTICE TO THE PRESS
The President today announced the appointment of Lester E. Edmond, of
Miami Beach, Florida, to be the Representative of the United States of
America on the South Pacific Commission for a term of two years. He
succeeds Stanley S. Carpenter who has resigned effective upon a date to be
determined.
The President today also announced the appointment of D. Hebden Porteus
of Honolulu, Hawaii, to be an Alternate Representative of the United States
of America on the South Pacific Commission for a term of two years. This
is a reappointment. He was appointed on November 13, 1973.
The ommission's purpose is to promote the economic and social advancement
of the people in the area. The Commission's role in this task is entirely ad-
visory and consultative, consisting of research, training, technical conferences,
seminars, and other means of supplementing and complementing the programs
carried on by the metropolitan powers and independent countries in the area.
Each of the Member countries appoint one representative and such alternates
as they care to designate. The Member countries are:
