POOL REPORT--Pool # 3
A crowd of Pe rhaps 100 stood ion the cobblestoned and brick sidewalks of
Delancey Street waiting for the President to come out of Barcay House enroute to
the debate. They were allneighborsxmf of the Haas family, or guestsof
neighbors. Casually dressed buLobviously affluent. There were a lot of children.
The crowd was in a festive mood, as if at a block At 9:06 p.m.
Sen. Richard Schweiker arrived and went inside the house. At 9:13 p.m. the
President came out, grinning broadly and looking fully ready for battle.
The crowd cheered. He gave them a big wave and hearty smile and then
immediately got in his limousine. Along the motorcade route there were
just occasional knots of people, wa ving as he passed. The trip took
four minutes. By time poolers could get out of cars the President had been
taken inside the thea tre.
