POOL REPORT
CHRISTMAS DAY
DECEMBER 25, 1976
The pool was ushered up to the Bass house around 1:10 p.m.;
where the President was already outside with his skiing partners
for the day: Senator John Glenn of Ohio, Indiana Lt. Governor
Robert Orr. Also on hand were a local Mr. and Mrs. Claus in
santa suits (names unknown). The President was asked about the
"MCP" towel given him by Susan and said he didn't know anything
about it. "No comment until I see it, " he laughed. He was asked
about his hip and said it was "better. 11 Asked if he intended to
take it easy on the slopes, he said, "I always do."
Enroute to chairlift numbe r six Glenn, who's midway through
a two-week vacation here, was asked about the conditions. By
usual Vail standards it's lousy, " he said, "but for anybody who's
done much skiing in the East it's fine. " The President shook a
few hands and descended the lift at 1:20 p.m.
At 3:20 p.m. the President skiied to a stop in front of the pool
with a loud "ooooooohhhhhhh. " He pronounc ed himself "great,"
said he fell once during the runs but "bounced right back. "
He was asked if he'd mad e any phone calls to Governor Carter
or anyone else and he said no. "We just had a family Christmas.
Santa Claus. was awfully good to us so we spent all our time doing
a little family Merry Christmas. 11 As he walked off he was heard
remarking to his skiing partners, "that was beautiful today--really!"
