The final hearing of our case before the Solicitor General was set for Saturday, January the 17th; 1903, the On Friday, January the 16th. 1903, the attorney of Chief Buf- fington's choice having been set aside, a contract was introduced in the Interior Department between Chief Buffington and a firm of Saint Louis attorneys, whose names are unknown to us. It was ex- ecuted and it was approved by the Commissioner of Indian Affairs and by the Secretary of the Interior within a few hours and one of the gentlemen so employed appeared before the Solicitor General at the hearing accorded us to suggest that they would immediately take the case to court under the au thority of the contract approved the day before by the Secretary of the Interior. It would thus appear that a decision by the Attorney General and by the President would avail us nothing to We deem it proper to say that on December 29, 1902, in addition to our protest and the evidence therein contained, we submitted to the Secretary a memorandum of our authority, of our organization, of our vast labor performed, of the disavowal of the Cherokee Na- tioal Council of any right to the benefit of the fund due us, with an earnest request to be heard on any future matter affecting our interest in the Interior Department. This request was ignored in approving the contract of January the 16th.
