Personal. WHITE HOUSE, WASHINGTON January 19, 1903. My dear Mr. Secretary: The President directs me to send to you the en- losed communication from Mr. Robert Owen, attorney for the Eastern Cherokees, with letters from Senators Cockroll and Quay, and to request that in view of what Senator Cockrell says you be good enough to have Judge Van Devanter take the case up at once with the Attorney General, so that the President may have a statement from both of them by to-morrow morning which he can show to Senator Cockrell.
