WHITE HOUSE,
WASHINGTON
January 19, 1903.
My dear Mr. Secretary:
The President directs me to send to you the en-
losed communication from Mr. Robert Owen, attorney
for the Eastern Cherokees, with letters from Senators
Cockroll and Quay, and to request that in view of
what Senator Cockrell says you be good enough to have
Judge Van Devanter take the case up at once with the
Attorney General, so that the President may have a
statement from both of them by to-morrow morning which
he can show to Senator Cockrell.
Very truly yours,
Garlenez
Secretary to the President
Hon. E. A. Hitchcock,
Secretary of the Interior.
