My dear President Roosevelt,
I wrote you last Monday recommending Mr. P. F. Griffin for
appointment as inspector of Indian clothing in the Indian Bureau of
the Interior Department in New York. I spoke to you of the matter
at the staff dinner, and you expressed yourself as favoring the
idea of having this gentleman appointed and gave me an appointment
to see you the following morning, and then introduced me to
secretary Hitchcock.
Mr. Griffin, the man I recommend, is a man in receipt of a
guaranteed salary of $25,000. per annum from Messrs. Rogers, Peet &
CO. and has besides that an interest in the profits, bringing his
total remuneration up to about $40,000. per annum. The position
of Indian Inspector is worth about $700. or $800. a year, and I
assert, and think the above practically proves, that Mr. Griffin
is a very desirable man for the place, and that his motives for
taking it are beyond suspicion, and the probabilities that he
would administer the place to the strictest honesty, amount to a
practical certainty.
The above is to recall the matter to your mind.
Now then I want to say that I am writing to Mr. Secretary
Hitchcock by this mail and that I hope you will do everything you
properly can, and that you have the time for, to have this
