- -1- seen articles, emanating from the Treasury Department, even quoting from the President, published all over the Pacific Coast, insin- uating dishonesty on my part. It has now reached a point where I feel that the truth should be known. One Cabell Whitehead, former official of the Ir easury Department under Mr. Gage, now a Nome Banker, together wi th a Mr. Webb, attorney for The Alaska Commercial Company of San Francisco, are among the lobbyists for the corporations, and are the principal leaders of the attack against myself. Mr. Whitehead pu ts in a large portion of his time writing articles for the Press, and at- tempting to blackmail out of office two of your officials at Nome, namely, Mr. Ri chards, the United States Marshal, and Col. Grigsby, the recently appointed United States District Attorney for the Nome District. The reason they are making the fight against these men is that they cannot use them, and the present attack on myself personally amounts almost to persecution.
