Personal. WHITE HOUSE, WASHINGTON November 15, 1901. My dear Sir: The President is of the opinion that there should be a Catholic on the Board of Indian Commissioners. He knows Archbishop Kane well; he is now in the west, at Dubuque, Iowa. The President thinks well of him and wishes to ask whether in your opinion he would not be a good man for this Board. The President understands that there is a Methodist bishop on the Board now (Bishop Walker), and also a doctor of di- vinity. While the President doubts the propriety of hav- ing a large number of clergymen on such a board, he thinks that as there are clergymen already connected with it, it would seem to be fair to add a Catholic. Very truly yours, Secretary to the President. Hon. E. A. Hitchcock, Secretary of the Interior.
