Letter from P. Porter to Senator Marion Butler

Dear Senator:< I am in receipt of your letter of the 30th ult. , respecting the notification to Mr. Murphy of the cancellation of his contract. The law under which he was employed made it necessary for me to give him thirty days' notice. That notice was given on the 22nd of March. Mr. Murphy holds that he will stand on his contract, Up to the 22nd of March and up to that time I can do nothing. I wrote the Secretary, as I informed you before, about the employ- ment of Mr. Mott, which I would live very much to do but I could not do it after my conversation with the Secretary, until he is entirely satisfied in the case. As soon after the 22nd inst. that I find the appointment will have the approval of the Secretary, I will recommend the appointment of Mr. Mott to the Secretary and if he approves it I will write you or Mr. Mott of the matter. In case the Secretary has taken my suggestion which I wrote you I had made to him, then I can only appoint an attorney for special cases with such stipulation as to salary as may be approved by the Secretary.
