It would be premature to comment at length upon the Council's consideration of this problem, which has caused grave concern throughout the world. The United States believes that a proper settlement of the issues can be brought about, and earnestly hopes that from the Security Council's consideration of the matter a means for accomplishing this can be evolved." Revised Resolution If asked whether the United States has drafted a new resolution or is urging the British to rewrite their original draft along more conciliatory lines, 1t is recommended that you reply along the following lines: "We naturally are considering what action by the Security Council would be most beneficial under the circumstances, and other members of the Council are naturally doing the same. We have not as yet adopted any final views as to the course which the Council should pursue." If asked what this Government is doing at the present time to bring about 8 resupption of negotiations between the parties, it is recommended that you reply along the following lines: "As I have often said, the United States wants a settlement between the parties and stands ready to be of any assistance that it can in bringing this about.
