HARRYS TRUMAN NARA SUBRERA
"The countries of Western Europe will not go communist," Mr. Weir
suggests, "since they have a heritage of Western civilization and traits
of individualism' and they 'are not going to jump from a bad condition to
a far worse condition just to spite us or themselves.' "Nobody has sug-
geated that Western Europe will embrace communism for spite or any other
reason. It is to be hoped that Mr. Weir will alter his conclusions about
communism in view of what has just happened to a people of deep Western
culture and ingreined traits of individualism in Czechoslavakia. What
has occurred to this gallent nation can and will happen elsewhere unless
the remaining countries, still free, are assured of our full and contin-
uing support in their efforts to regain their economic and political
independence," the Committee's statement concluded.
The Committee for the Marshall Plan is & non-profit, non-partisan
organization of private citizens with offices at 537 Fifth Avenue, New
York City. Henry L. Stimson, former Secretary of State, is National Chair-
man and Robert P. Patterson, former Secretary of Mar, is Chairman of the
Executive Committee.
