Memorandum of Conversation
DATE: March 10, 1949
SUBJECT:
Special Meeting of COAS in honor of Secretary of State
PARTICIPANTS: Ambassador Enrique Corominas, Chairman of the COAS
Dr. Alberto Lleras, Secretary General of the OAS
Secretary Acheson
Mr. Paul Daniels, Director for American Republic Affairs
COPIES TO:
1-1493
Ambassador Corominas, accompanied by Dr. LLeras, called by
appointment and delivered to the Secretary, on behalf of the
Council of the Organization of American States, an invitation
to be present at a special session of the Council to be held in
his honor.
Ambassador Coroninas added that he and the other Ambassadors
accredited to the Council attached great importance to continuing
support of the Organization of American States by President Truman
and the Secretary of State.
The Secretary said that he accepted the invitation with great
pleasure, and that arrangements for the exact date could be made
following Ambassador Corominas' return from Cuba, where he was
proceeding at the end of the week. The Secretary added that he
could assure the Ambassador of the deep interest of President
Truman in the Organization of the American States, and the whole-
hearted support of the United States Government; and that he would
express the same assurances when he met with the Council at the
special meeting which was being arranged.
Ambassador Corominas said that, recognizing the interest
and responsibility of the United States, he wished to assure the
Secretary that, as Chairman of the Havana Committee on colonies,
he would proceed with great caution and avoid actions which might
have a disturbing effect, bearing in mind traditional friendly
relations with the Western Hemisphere countries. The Secretary
expressed satisfaction at hearing this statement.
