Alleged statement by British Citizen
re British Recovery
The Secretary telephoned Senator Connally to report his
recommendation on a certain matter and the Senator took
occasion to inquire about the alleged statement of a British
citizen to a group down in Georgia concerning British economic
recovery. The Senator said he understands this man said
they have recovered fully and don't need US assistance, and
that he stated the farmers in England are in better condition
than American farmers.
The Secretary mentioned Christohher Mayhew and the
Senator said this was another statement.
The Secretary
said it was a terrible think, that he would have it looked into
and let the Senator know the facts.

(Mr. Gross was in the office at the time of this conversa -
