Senator Connally called to say that a vote was coming up
in the Joint Armed Services and Foreiga Relations Committee
on the Knowland Resolution ealling for General MacArthur's
and Admiral Badger's return to testify on conditions in the
Far East. The Senator wanted my confirmation of his view
that he should vote against the Resolution. I said that I was
of the firm opinion that General MacArthur should not come
back and become involved in a full dress fight, and that Ad-
miral Badger should certainly not be called on to leave his
command at this time when the situation is so delicate,
I told him that of course in connection with the very thorough
study of the Far Eastern situation we would get the views of
MacArthur and the Joint Chiefs on the whole subject.
He asked if he could repeat my views as to the inadvisability
of the return of MaçArthur and Badger, and I said I thought
he should not do this, but should say that I would discuss the
matter with the President and Secretary Johnson.
Senator Connally ended the conversation by sasing he would
vote against the resolution.
