Foreign Minister Van Zeeland said that while he did not wish
to take up the question of uranium with me during his present
visit to the United States, he did wish to reserve the right
to do so at some later date. He said that he thought he
might wish to discuss it in 7 or 8 months, particularly in
the light of making some sort of arrangements for the Belgian
use of uranium for purely non-military purposes. He said
that he understood that we regarded the whole question of
uranium as having top secret classifieation and said that he
had and would continue to maintain a similar security class-
ification on all information relating to the subject.
I replied that I would, of course, be ready to discuss
uranium with Mr. Van Zeeland whenever he might care to raise
the subject with me. I also told him that he was entirely
correct in his understanding as to the top secret classification
of information relating to the Congo uranium and that I was
glad to have confirmation that he also felt the same way about
it.
