Mr. lio soid that he was deeply concorned over the Chinese question and the Soviet walkouts from the Security Council and other United Nations bodies, Ho said that he thoreforo wiohed to díseuss the matter in strict confidence with me and to obtein my vieve on the whole situation. He said that his whole worle had boen based on the premiso that the Soviet Union does not want arned conflict and that the Soviet Union intends to remain in the United Nations. Ho vont on to any that devolopments in recent vooka have caused him to ask himsolf whether these assumptions are correct. Ho soid that ho undorstood the United States position in regard to the seating of representatives of the Chinese communist govornment in the Security Gouncil and that ho thought that our position foix, reasonable and correet; that is, that when sevon members of the Security Gouncil voto to seat a roprosontativo of tho ragime on a procedural motãon, this vill bo done. Mr. Lie spolto in high torma of the Prosident's recent statement on Formosa. and my aldress before the Pross Club last Wednesday on China and Fax Bastorn matters. Ho said that after these statements ho had boen mach encouraged and hnd felt that the problom was on its way to a solution. lie added, howevez, that the seizuro by the Chinose commists of US, French and Dutch of ficial property in Poiping, and the understandable U. S. reaction thoroto, acemed to him to demone strate that the settlemont of this matter along the pattern he had proviously expocted will be neither 08.07 nor achieved at an early date.
