Ambassador van Kleffens called at his request to
discuss the current general political situation in
Indonesia. He read extensively from notes which he had
brought along with him. Copies of these are attached.
The Ambassador began by saying that he had been
instructed by Dr. Stikker to invite the Department's
attention to developments in Indonesia which have been
a cause of growing concern at The Hague. He said that
his Government rather thought of Indonesia as being a show
horse for the West in the Asiatic parade and he believed
that we a.s well a.s The Hague would want to do everything
that appropriately could be done to help to stabilize the
present moderate regime of Sukarno and Hatta. He said
that in his Government's view there was no objection to
the movement toward a "unitarian" form of government if
such a development was directed toward strengthening the
central government at Djakarta. There were, however, many
indications, some of which are mentioned in the attached
notes, that the movement toward a unitarian form of govern-
ment may actually precipitate a serious rift between the
Sukarno-Hatta regime in Djakarta and former Republican
authorities in Jogjakarta, Mr. van Kleffens expressed the
hope that the United States Government would give full
consideration to the need of strengthening the influence
of the Hatta regime and suggested that any advice or
