MEMORANDUM OF TELEPHONE CONVERSATION
Between Secretary and Mr. Short.
M r. Short telephoned Secretary Acheson and said
there was a story out of London that the British and
the United States have agreed on a new Far Eastern policy
and it is going to be announced in Parliament.
The Secretary said that so far as he knew there
was absolutely nothing to it. He verified this with
Mr. Rusk who was in the room at the time. He said
that in talks which had been going on between the
British and us there was nothing new.
Mr. Short asked if the statement that had been
discussed prior to the MacArthur statement that he
was going to try to consult the field commander had
been antedated, and whether there was a new statement
being considered. The Secretary said he thought the
previously considered statement was antedated, but
there was no new statement.
Mr. Short asked the Secretary if he thought there
was something going on in London, and, if so, whether
we could find out about it.
The Secretary said he would try to discover what the
London story was about.
