GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE 16-61120-1 The Yugoslav Ambassador alled to present his government's formal re- quest for assistance in the form of materiel for the Yugoslav armed forces. In presenting the note (copy attached) the Anbessador summerized its min points and indicated his government's hope that the US Government would be able to comply with the request. He stated that the Yugoslav Government MAS making this request as the next step following the provisionel agreement reached during General Popovie's visit here. In receiving the note I told the Ambessador that the US Government was fully aware of Yugoslavia's difficult position and would give the Yugoslav request the most serious and urgent consideration I said that we have been pleased with the results of General Popovic's visit here and that we hoped to see continued cooperation in this field, including the early initiation of technical conversations between military representatives of the two countries. I then referred to the Ambassador's impending return to Tugoslavia on con- sultation and expressed the wish that he communi ate with his government our satisfaction with the recent visit of General Popovic and with the growing cooperation between the two countries.
