GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE 16-61120-1 After a friendly greeting Mr. Ikramullah said he had a letter for sea from biaqunt Ali Khan which he wi Labed to band me since he knew that altbough Liaquat Ali had come to a tragio death, this sestage still represented the desires of his Government. In fact, Ohulam Xohazmed, now Governor General, had participated in the decision to send the letter, and henca Mr. Ikrazullah assumed that he was still obligated to the poliey set forth. After reading the letter which requested assistance in obtaining vital requirements of Pakisten in defense equipment and stores, I expressed ay great personal sorrow ever the death of the lata Prime Minister. lir. Ikramulish said he would like to know what our position was with respect to defense production; he believed I was the one parson in the Government best qualified to give hin the brond picture. I replied that for reasons I did not entirely understand our production was behind schedule; the targets wo had wished to neet in 1952 probably sould not be reached in 1953. This eaused us great concern and posed difficult probless. In addition, I was subjected to great pressures from many directione. The amount of materiel wa had had to consube in Korea was very great. This, togethor with delays in production, had resulted in failure to nest the requirements of NATO countries. Mr. Tkramullah anid be understood our problem but that with the great production facilities we possessed together with the quantity of stores on band he hoped Pakistan could obtain at least some of its needs.
