Mr. Wrong telephoned the Secretary about another matter
and then went into the question of the appointment of the
Secretary General of NATO. Mr. Wrong said he had been
talking to Mr. Arnold Heeney about it and they had several
names. One is Mr. Van Roijen, another is Mr. Hugh Gateskill
and the third is Mr. Malcolm MacDonald. The Secretary
thought the last suggestion was a very good one and was
worth careful consideration.
Later, Mr. Bonnet called the Secretary on the same
subject. He was under instructions from Mr. Schuman
to enlist our support in obtaining Mr. Pearson. He said that
the French Government had instructed the French Ambassador
in London to approach Mr. Eden and ask him to approach
Mr. Pearson. The Secretary told him that we would be glad
to do so but he thought it would be well for Mr. Bonnet to call
Mr. Wrong and get directly from him an impression which the
Secretary had that Mr. Pearson was not available. Mr. Bonnet
agreed to do this and said he would call Mr. Acheson back this
afternoon. The Secretary said that if Mr. Schuman wanted us
to ask Mr. Gifford to call on Mr. Eden in support of
Mr. Pearson's candidacy, we would be glad to do so, but he
wished that Mr. Wrong be consulted before we did anything
further.
