DEPARTMENT OF STATE
1144-a
OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY
September 5, 1952
RECORDS
SERVICE"
Barbara:
The Secretary and others at this morning's
meeting mentioned only that they had discussed
the NATO annual review with Mr. Pearson
last night at the Canadian Embassy. They
described Pearson as being very sensible in his
approach to the various problems which will be
faced in tackling the annual review and also
in establishing the NATO program for the
forthcoming year. He said he was particularly
opposed to the British idea that we should
"take it easy" until certain gadgets and new
super-weapons were developed, since to
burden the European economies in this
period might turn out to be unnecessary.
However, all I think you might use would
be to remark that Pearson was very sound and
cooperative in his approach and that the
meeting was very helpful.
