Mr. Randy Sowell
Archivist
Harry S. Truman Library
500 West U.S. Highway 24
Independence, MO 64050
Dear Mr. Sowell:
Thank you for your interest in the photographs taken by my grandfather, Dr.
Darrell Clayton Crain Jr., during the Truman administration's 1950 mission to Saudi
Arabia. Dr. Crain (1910-1995) was a rheumatologist and one of several American
physicians sent to treat King Ibn Saud in April 1950.
As an amateur photographer, Dr. Crain documented the 1950 trip using a
Leica camera. The resulting Kodachrome slides were stored in his home and, after
his death, in my uncle's home, until January 2015 when I learned of the existence of
my grandfather's slides and asked to scan them. I created digital copies of the
images using an Epson Perfection V500 scanner.
The attached "Inventory of Dr. Crain's 1950 Trip Slides" provides further
details on the items in this collection. My mother, Barbara Crain Rollinson, and I are
pleased to donate the entire collection to the Harry S. Truman Library, including 184
original physical slides in two slide cases, digital copies of the same on a USB flash
drive, and associated copyrights. Please find the slides and flash drive enclosed with
this memo. We look forward to signing a deed of gifts to confirm donation of these
materials.
As requested, I have canvassed family members to uncover any surviving
documents relating to the trip. The result is an orange binder enclosed herein,
containing photocopies of various documents of interest.
Finally, please recall that I have posted all of the images referenced here to a
public Flickr account under the name: "Posthumous DCC." My preference is to keep
the images on that account, along with a statement noting the donation to the
Truman Library. However, if this would not be acceptable to you, please let me
know and I will remove the 1950 trip images from that site promptly.
Sincerely,
Alice R.Makl
