Hinde Postmaster Independence, Missouri Dear Edgar: Appreciate very much your telegram of the Twenty Sixth and letter of the Twenty Fourth, and it was particularyly grati- fying to learn that Thompson had finally sent his endorsement. I am sorry that you did not make the proper impression on the editor of the greatest newspaper in the world but I think he will probably come around. He wrote me one of the nicest letters I have ever received. I am not running for Secretary of War, Governor General of the Philippines, Vice President of a railroad or anything of the sort. I am going to run for re-election to the United States Senate, and put all my postmasters on the spot; one bald-headed one I know in particular, although I don't think he will be in much of a spot. I finally agreed on Henry Dillingham for United States Marshal, and I am trying to get a job for Canfil with the Secret Service or as United States Marshal in Puerto Rico. I don't know whether he would accept that assignment or not but I am trying to get him fixed up.
