"GENERAL HEADQUARTERS
AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCES
Historical Section, G.S.
Fobruary 27, 1919.
Commanding General,
35th Division,
A.P.O. 709, American E.F,
My dear Generel Dugan:
I have been directed to organize E. party to study the
operations of the Amorican Expedi tionary Forces on the ground.
The plan is to spend the next month or so here, studying the
papers, then to take the field and go over the operations on the
ground and determine as nearly. as possible what actually happened
before the evidence, now rapidly disappearing, is all gone.
Insofar as possible, I plan to have offi cers work on
specific tasks in pairs, preferably one infantry and one artillery
officer.
Si nce your division is soon to return to the states
it occurs to me to ask if you have any officers suitable for this
work who expect to remain in France or who would be willing to stay
for a few months for thi S purpos'e.
The requirements are specifically;
(c) Field officers or exceptionally qualified
captains to take part in the study of papers
and in the field work.
(b) Lieutenants especiolly qualified for work
as topographers, statisticians or archivists.
Vory truly yours,
the
