Prague, January 3, 1947. Dearest Kay: It was so very kind of you to think about me and send me your beautiful Christmas present in the way of the CARE box. I do appreciate every single bit of it and most of all the spirit of friendship in which it was given. I have been expenting eagerrly your visit to Prague and was very sorry to learn about your leaving Nürenberg as I knew that there was not much hope of seeing you so soon again. It is such a pity that beeing so near Prague you could not get here and it shows how busy you must have been with all your work all the time. Many Americans come to Prague now and most particularly those whose jobs are in Berlin or other German cities. They find it a relief to come to a city with all panes in the windows and a good deal to see in the shops although not all the goods you see are actually for sale always. The conditions here are improving with every day to come but it will take a long time to reach the prewar stndarts if ever we will get as far. I shall not be telling you much about myself. After the loss of our only son last year we do not find life very easy but we keep on hoping that we may be at least useful if we cannot be happy. We have the work and the happy memories of our dear boy and also our friends who help us to get on. That is also why I thank you most sin- cerely for your kind thought of me - it is a real comfort to know that even so far away there is a friend who gives his helpful hand. If it is not asking too much I should very much like to hear about you - I have read your letter in the fall issue of the Vassar Magazine but it only prompted my eagerness to know more. I remember with pleasure the Christmas Dinner with you in Poughkeepsie, your brother and sister and Professor Fite, our visit to Frany Oakford in on Philadelphia and finally ypur trying my mother's costumes 20 years ago in Prague. Let me thank you again, dear Kay, for ypur kind gift and your friendship which even the long years of separation did not eraze. Looking still forward to your belated visit to Prague, I am with all good wishes lovingly yours R hide amehoiona GOY
