Subj is Korean augmentation to US Army (referred to
below as Katusa)
2. Since the earliest stages of the Korean conflict, US
and UN Units have been augmented by integrating ROKA soldiers
into those units with normal combat duties.
3. Katusa pers have been attached to the US and Commonwealth
Divs. Eighth Army has been directed to limit such attachments
to 2500 Katusa pers per div, a total of 20,000 trps.
4. Current situation dictates increased attachment of Katusa
pers to Eighth Army Units, particularly to non-divisional arty
btrys, RCT, Engr Cos, and Ord Cos. Such pers would perform
duties as drivers, mechanics, heavy equip operators, and welders.
They are not employed as unskilled laborers.
5. The attachment of Katusa pers to US and UN Units not
only augments the fighting strength of those units, but also
provides the finest tng for cadremen who are later aval for
return to the ROKA. These pers strengthen units which are
temporarily short of American soldiers. They increase the
staying power of US and UN Units. Because the major portion
of Katusa pers are utilized in front line duty a saving in
lives of our soldiers results. The increased rotation from
front line duties of US and UN pers in combat units, which
Katusa permits, decreases our casualties.
