Almost complete silence ROK officialdom fol Rhee April 14,
Seoul statement opposing any armistice which did not insure
unification of Korea is notable contrast to earlier vigorous
denunciation of negots by officials, newspapers, and contrived
mass mtgs, which reached peak of intensity last Dec. Also
indicative of new restraint was matter of fact statement by
FONMIN Pyun while briefing Nat1 assembly May 10, on armistice
developments to effect that press reports of intensified fighting
in his opinion indicated "a complete rupture is near,
assembli yment listened soberly but expressed no reaction.
Immed fol first news of Commie rejection of UNC package proposal
there was virtually no press comment. However on ninth and
tenth editorials in PYONG YA NG SHINMUN, DONG A ILBO, SEOUL
Shinmun and YONHAP SHINMUN in which bracket wide range of opinion
agreed that critical point in negots had been reached and echoed
old chant that Korean people opposed anv ceasefire without unificat-
ion and that people must exert themselves for successful prosecution of war
Truman and Congressional statements supporting UNC stand on
POW 's recd wide coverage but have not (rpt not) yet recd commer
in editorials.
Opinion of gen public probably is not (rpt not) enthusiastie
about prospect of renewed 11-out hostilities.
