My dear Mrs. Walter:
This will acknowledge your letter to
Cooking
the President regarding the old wood from the
White House now undergoing repairs.
Beoni
We, of course, appreciate the friendly
interest which prompted your suggestion, but I
regret that we are unable to comply with it. As
a matter of fact, suitable material for preserva-
tion as an historic memento is very limited and
even if we attempted to distribute it as you sug-
gest there is the possibility that nuch of it
would find its way into the commercial market
thus making it difficult to assure those obtain-
ing mementoes through such channels that they were
in fact authentic and not fashioned from some
material having no connection with the White House.
Furthermore, to aid the funds you mention through
the sale of these souvenirs would discriminate
against other worthwhile appeals.
Thank you, nevertheless, for your thought-
fulness in writing to us.
Very sincerely yours,
K. TRUMBER
HICHIVES ARD
WILLIAM D. HASSETT
Secretary to the President
