Dear Mr. President:
mw
I am sorry but I find that it is impossible
for me to give adequate time to the work of
your Committee on Higher Education, and
though you may not realize it, that work
is under considerable criticism because
there is a feeling, in the National Educ-
ation Association for instance, that the
emphasis is being placed on private educ-
ation and to o little thought is being
given to public education.
Knowing that it is not pos sible for me to
be at the meetings, I would not feel that
it is right for me to continue to be a
member or to have my name connected with
it when I could ão no work.
I suggested that Miss Charl Williams might
take my place because she has been for a
long time in the NEA and was the first vice-
chairman of the Democratic National Committee,
years ago. It is because I feel this work
is so important that I think someone who
can give it adequate attention and thought
should be hamed.
With very deep regrets, I am,
AND
Very cordially yours,
:
