FILED BY THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE MR. HOPKINS WASHINGTON 407-13 JUN -7 1952 Steel stake JUN 5 1952 Dear Mr. President: The suggestion in your memorandum of June 4, 1952 that most essential defense production be shifted from the steel plants that are on strike to those which are still in operation is being carried out immediately. The Department of Defense is working out the necessary implementa- tion with the appropriate mobilization agencies. As you realize, the capacity of the open mills will be able to handle at best only a relatively small part of the steel required for the Depart- ment of Defense programs. Dr. Steelman's office will be kept currently advised of the progress made in shifting orders to these mills. With great respect, I am Faithfully yours, ROBERT A. LOVETT The President x1285 The White House X342 x526
