SEE: PPF 6078 rmb CROSS REFERENCE SHEET 5114 Name: PRICE, Mr. E. Melville Date: 5/21/52 Advertising Manager Organization: The New Yorker Address: 25 West 43rd Street New York 18, New York Regarding: Letter to the President thanking him for his guided tour of the White House. He relates a story relative to the John Quincy Adams chandeliers in the East /room of the White House.- On 5/31/52 the President wrote (Dear Mr. Price) stating the origi- nal chandeliers that belonged in the East Room were turned over to the Capitol by McKim, Meade and White at Theodore Roosevelt's order. He tried to get those chande- liers back to place them in the East Room but the Congress would not let him have them. Says the chandeliers and the mantels were "Adam" pieces - not "Adamses" pieces. Some of these Adam mantels were placed back in the White House on its reconstruction but some Decorator or architect decided that those Adam mantels should not be re- placed in the East Room - they put some red marble mantels in, of which he disap- proves, but the Congress decided that a Congressional Commission should be in charge of the construction, and he had a hard time even getting a State Stairway installed. Suggests that when he goes to the Capitol Building he got to the Office of the Secre- tary of the Senate and see the chandelier over his desk. See: 16-59420-1 GPO
