Hon. Harry S. Truman,
President of the United States,
Washington, D.C.
Dear Sir:
I have read several accounts of the party at Jefferson
Island, attended by you, on account by Drew Pearson enclos-
ed herewith. "Time also gave a very alluring account
of the party.
I am very much disappointed to see our President set an
example to our people in the gambling and drinking that
went on at this party. It certainly is not an example
for the young folks of our great Country, and if I read
correctly young folks are the Number 1 problem of our
Country. It does seem to me that you, as President of
the United States, should refrain from such things that
are carrying our great Country downward instead of upward.
Gambling is so rampant every where and especially poker,
and much money is being lost by those who do not have it
to loose. How any body can sanction drinking intoxicating
liquors, I cannot see. It has taken more men and women to
hell, in my mind, than any other thing in America. By
looking at the pictures and reading the accounts of our boys
overseas, you would think that they cared for nothing but
beer and whiskey and this is true possibly of our moving
pictures.
I don't guess you will read this letter, but hope that the
Secretary receiving it will give you the chance and hope
that it will make you think. I have been a supporter of
the Roosevelt policies for many years.
Yours very truly,
TRUMAN
