U.S.
Washington, D. C.
GOVER
Dear Mr. Truman:
You probably have seen in the papers some statements concerning
our stand at the Convention which was held in Fort Worth, Texas.
Our motion was intended primarily as a precaution to safeguard our
denomination and the influence of our Christian schools. Having
noticed in the News Week and also the Life Magazine a report of your
poker playing and whiskey drinking, I felt that it would be incon-
sistent for Baylor University to confer upon you an honorary degree.
Baylor, as you know, was founded for the purpose of educating preachers
and missionaries and has been a constant bulwark against sin and has
stood for Baptist principles of right through all the years. Am
enclosing to you a copy of the Church Covenant adopted by our Baptist
Churches. If the reports of your conduct are correct, then you have
sinned against God and your Church and should, in the spirit of Christ,
seek to make it right.
In our Church, we have an all night prayer meeting every Saturday
night and have had for nearly two years. Many have prayed for you that
God would direct you in the affairs of our great nation and we're
grateful for your leadership, but we also are anxious that your moral
and spiritual life would measure up to the highest and best of a
Christian. Especially are we grateful for your desire to help feed
a hungry world. As Christians and as Baptists, you may count us in
on everything that is good and right. We feel that surely a man of
your influence and position could wield a mighty influence against
legalized liquor traffic.
If I am mistaken in any statement that I have made, if you will
correct me I will make the necessary apology and be glad to do it.
Sincerely and prayerfully yours,
L.L.Roff. L. L. Roloff
