The Honorable Clark Clifford
Assistant to the President
1-1
P.P.F.
of the United States
Washington, D. C.
My dear Mr. Clifford:
ind
I want to congratulate you and his Excellency the Honorable
Harry S. Truman for his glorious victory. I know you had a

hand in it. When he spoke here, I listened over the radio and
became so enthusiastic that I found myself saying "Hit them Harry!"
Election goo
"Hit them Harry Since you are so close to him I hope you will
help him to live up to the high expectation of the people. He
will go down in history as one of the greatest presidents. Al-
though I am a Republican I have watched him through the years and
he has always voted for the thing that was right.
I was not surprised or disappointed, for my church, Central
Baptist, of which I am a deacon, held a week of prayer before the
Ministers left for Washington, D. C. last year. The March on Wash-
ington was headed by my Pastor, the reverend T. E. Huntley and Dr.
Jernagin of Washington, D. C. Dr. Jernagin is also very close to
me for we were born in adjoining counties in the state of Mississippi.
Tell Mr. Truman that no member of the Baptist Church should
play cards or gamble in any way. I do not think that he is guilty
of such as stated in the enclosed newspaper clipping. You tell him
that God has his hands on him and try to keep himself worthy of the
task before him and that the whole nation is praying for him.

Yours truly
