as TRUMAN the and WHY TRUMAN IS PRESIDENT Today the country is united behind President Truman's firm stand in the Far East. When the President said "the time has come to draw the line against Communism" he was speaking for all Americans. His calm faith in committing American forces to defending South Korea as the cold war suddenly turned into a hot one was that of a man who was sure of himself and his country It was an act without fear or doubt. And yet some few are still surprised at his decisiveness: they have never forgotten that Harry S. Truman was an "accidental" President. Nothing could be more false than to think that Presi- dent Truman was ever an "accidental" holder of the nation's high- est office. Like others I may be more gifted with hindsight than foresight, but I can truthfully say that in June, 1943, the first steps were taken to make sure this country would have just such a man in office to face the crucial post-war years. While World War II was still raging a few of us who were closest to the Presidency were already afraid the end of that war might only precipitate us into other conflicts in our times.
