WHY TRUMAN IS PRESIDENT
Regarding the Roosevelt letter -- on the train the President stuck
it inside Hannegan's pocket so Hannegan could not see it. Roosevelt
knew he would not dare pull it out and read it as if he were doubting
what Roosevelt had written. Ed was dying to see it but Roosevelt stalled
them both with pointed questions until the train left.
"It was as if he could not get rid of us fast enough". After
reading the letter, Hannegan was so embarrassed he did not want to show
it to Ed at first, so they began a hot potato routine with the delegates,
both stalling saying the other had the letter, etc, etc.
Obviously, President Roosevelt had never given Hannegan a prior
note regarding Truman (as Jonathan Daniels alleges) or they would not
have needed one when Roosevelt came to Chicago.
The reason Pauley was so insistent on getting this letter -
Senator Jackson of Indiana had told Pauley two days before that the
President had sent Jackson a letter on Wallace, thus confounding everyone.
